I photographed this buck several times at a salt lick in Yazoo County, Mississippi, both in and out of velvet. He has an interesting tine jutting out forward from his right base.

Ghost in the shadows - While most people would only see the nice buck in the foreground, a closer look in the background reveals a nice buck making a rub on a small cedar sapling.

Exactly how long does it take a buck to completely shed his velvet? According to these photos, less than 24 hours. In the first photo, the buck is in full velvet. In the second photo, the buck has completely stripped the velvet and his antlers are still blood red.

The peak of the rut occurs in late December in central Mississippi. However, it is obvious from this photo that this buck has still been fighting and it is past the middle of February. A close look at the G-2 on the right antler of the buck reveals dried blood. The other buck in the fight must have received a deep puncture wound.

What an unusual sight. Rather than fighting or sparring, these two buck are performing social grooming. A closer look reveals the buck on the left licking the face of the buck on the right.
